Structures, buildings and infrastructure that are becoming infected with concrete cancer is a common problem within the building industry. Infected concrete will begin to show signs of wear and tear, as the steel that are contained inside the concrete mass will start to rust. As part of the rusting process the steel expands, which causes displacement of the surrounding concrete. If not prevented, the concrete will begin to crack and the process of disrepair will accelerate.

Untreated concrete spalling can be dangerous because buildings and infrastructure are highly exposed to exacerbating elements such as heavy weather conditions that can cause pieces of concrete to fall from the structure and potentially damage nearby property – and in worst case scenario, people passing by.

Background – New Standards for Tunnel Safety and Maintenance

Industrial market trends in terms of building longer tunnels are arising on a global scale. As a result, comprehensive maintenance programs constitute an increasingly large part of the budget for market operators in all sizes. Concrete cancer prevention as well as overall maintenance in tunnels are costly activities. In fact, the costs assigned to these activities have increased exponentially over the last 20 years.

Application Process

ProGuard is not critical to application conditions (e.g. weather) and it can be applied directly to dry or damp surfaces and in high humidity, which means that a minimum of surface preparation is required. In addition, only one coat is needed for a highly effective result. Compared to traditional anti-carbonation/anti-graffiti paint systems that require multiple layers for a satisfying result, ProGuard is a long-term, cost-effective solution.

Using a single coat procedure, the costs associated with labour, equipment and materials are reduced, in addition to overall time consumption as a result of exceptionally fast application – free of long curing times.

Cleaning Procedure

ProGuard features hydrophobic functionality, which results in fast, simple and chemical free cleaning procedures for the benefit of the environment and customer’s bottom line.

A dirty and polluted concrete surface can easy regain its clean appearance only by use of water at low-medium pressure spray and a rotating cleaning brush.

In case of graffiti removal, newly painted graffiti can easily be wiped clean with a sponge and a citrus cleaner for industrial use. In case of old graffiti, it must first be sprayed with a cleaner after which a nylon bristle brush can be used to lightly scrub the tagged surface followed by a high-pressure wash.

ProGuard Texture

– A decorative texture with inherent anti-graffiti property

ProGuard Texture is a hybrid coating material with permanent anti-graffiti and decorative anti-carbonation properties that is specially developed for concrete cancer prevention and infrastructure protection.

Compared to commonly-used organic coatings, ProGuard is developed with both organic and inorganic components, which provide our coatings with additional properties that ensure high performance and ultimate protection.

Prior to ProGuard Texture, basic texture coatings have been applied in concrete finishes with the purpose of masking imperfections. These coatings have later shown to be inadequate in multiple industries as they lack inherent anti-graffiti properties and since the topography of the texture finish does not allow additional coatings to be applied, a new solution was required.

Increasing demand for an all-in-one solution led to the development of ProGuard Texture, which is the first coating with inherent anti-graffiti property. ProGuard Texture allows concrete finishes to achieve the desired textured look in addition to protect the surface from graffiti vandalism.
